Only a few days after celebrating the New Year with family have we all been inundated with apocalyptic news of environmental catastrophes and impending conflicts throughout the world. Yet I have self importantly focused all of my efforts inwards and been working hard on my annual “Resolution Book”.
When you’re as self loathing as I am then self improvement is a necessary distraction from the world. While many hold the tradition of resolutions with contempt; I appreciate the opportunity to see where I can improve myself and potentially improve the lives of those around me.
2020 hold the potential to be an important year for me. I’m trying my hand at Freelancing for the first time, I’m learning a language, I’m planning a backpacking trip and I’m applying to university (Bloody hell application deadlines are in two weeks!).
To quote William Shakespeare “It is not in the stars to hold our destiny, but in ourselves”. The quote from Julius Caesar can serve as an irritating reminder that we are responsible for our own lives and I’m incredibly guilty of waiting around, hoping something interesting will happen.
I have many hopes for this decade. I hope something more is done about climate change. I hope we get along better with our neighbours, I hope flapper dresses and skinny ties make a comeback and I hope I make a positive impact in 2020. I hope you do too.
Happy New Year.
