Happy New Year

Are we all ready to face the onslaught that is 2021? Only 12 days in and the year has been complete carnage!

I always try to approach each new year with a relative degree of enthusiasm. Enthusiasm that has usually run its course before February Commences. But I always write countless resolutions. For the last three years I have maintained detailed notebooks to track my progress and make specific plans regarding said plans. I still always fall short of my expectations, but the notebooks have helped me to considerably better than I have in previous years.

So far though the only difference in 2021 has been that this is the first year I haven’t bought a satirical data diary. This year’s just has a nice painting on the front. Perhaps at the grand age of 23 I have lost my edge?

I saw the New Year in by writing an essay until 23:45, watching the BBC Fireworks with my mother until 00:05, then watching Over The Hedge before bed. It does hold up to my childhood expectations, although they were not particularly high even then, I believed then and still do that the bear had perfectly valid reasons to be angry and while he lacked the decorum of other cartoon bears, still deserved understanding that was not forthcoming from the audience.

I’m back in my flat now, I have no sleeping pattern and haven’t eaten a properly cooked meal in a few days. But I am looking forward to life getting back to normal, resuming my studies and actually making some films. The documentary I produced is almost finished and hopefully this will be the last year of lockdowns for at least some time, perhaps I might even get out for some non-essential purposes.

Fingers crossed at least!
