March 2021

What a busy month its been! I have had so much to do but now we seem to be coming to the end of assignments and the like. I’m still in the process of producing a scene from Blade Runner for our studio exam, but with my part of the exam out of the way I’m now doubling as a boom operator and it must be said that my arms have never hurt this much. I’m starting to think that my P.E teachers were right about the importance of (at least some) push ups.

After The Wake is in full swing as well, the filming dates are set and the production file is done, actors have been hired and we’re nearly all ready, pending one or two more rewrites. Something that amazes me is how distinctly different a script can be after a few rewrites. The short film I wrote last month barely resembles the one I am currently producing. But all the changes have been for the better.

What else have I done to keep busy? Well I edited together a commerical for a friend’s business! I produced sound for a craft skills assessment and some friends and I filmed a three shot sequence for our cinematography assignment, it was all incredibly good fun!

I’ve been watching a lot of films this month too! I’ve been participating in the Wales One World Film Festival. I have discovered some amazing pieces of film, my personal favourites being Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom, Arab Blues and The Long Walk. I was able to go to some Q&A events too which were very good and I was able to get some very useful advice from the directors and producers. It was a really fun event that I thoroughly enjoyed, hopefully next year I can attend in person.

As always my friends and I have made many late night trips to Cardiff Bay, the fact that pubs and the like aren’t open and we can’t meet in eachothers homes has resulted in a lot of late night trips to random Cardiff spaces. Its a little bit like being a penniless teenager again, except if we choose to drink in the street we actually have valid ID.

That’s the bulk of my life right now, I’m getting lots of projects underway and will hopefully be even busier once my work for the term is over!

Hope you’re all keeping well!

~Alexander~
