Another month has passed, although the passing of this month marks one year since I turned 23, thought it would be really clever to write a blog post called “Nobody Loves You When You’re 23” and ultimately abandoned the project when I realised that not only have thousands of people already done that, but that it wasn’t funny then either.
I spent the first half of April doing very little, watching pixar films on my Dad’s couch or kitchen sink dramas at my mum’s. I ignored fast approach deadlines and made a silly horror trailer with my cat.
The second half of April has been a far more fulfilling couple of weeks. A short film I wrote and am currently producing started principal photography and wrapped on time by the end of the week. The one thing you’re never prepared for when starting out in film is the need to have actors say the same lines over and over again for slightly different shots, in your mind its time to move to the next line as soon as the take is done correctly. A younger version of myself was always furious at how long the wait was between Harry Potter Films. The adult version of me gets it though.
The making of the film went relatively well though, we were able to change our filming times around the sunlight. We got all the shots we needed done in time and we didn’t break any expensive equipment. Although we had our moments where things looked bleak, like the temperatures dropping to sub zero on our last day of filming…IN BLOODY APRIL! It reflects very badly on your skills as a producer when the entire cast and crew freeeze to death.
I also started a new job, my film career is going so well that I now work full time…in a coffee shop! I’ve worked a lot of jobs before and this is definitely one of the better ones! So life is (aggressively touches wood) pretty enjoyable right now!
That said I am deeply sleep deprived after staying up until 4am finishing a video essay on A Single Man. But the academic year is almost up and I will be focusing on my own projects for a few months, as well as earning enough money to eat now that the sweet, sweet nectar or student finance won’t be available until April.
